DEFINITION

Avian influenza is a zoonotic disease affecting primarily birds and wild birds that are the reservoirs of the virus. The disease can cause high mortality in poultry. Man and pig are sensitive. It is caused by the! ' influenza type A. The incubation period in humans is 2-5 days.

WHICH PEOPLE ARE MOST AT RISK?

The entire population may be affected by avian influenza. Populations in close and prolonged contact with poultry are at high risk: growers, producers; distributors, processors, consumers, poultry workers, poultry technicians, bird waters, forest and water agents, national park officers, researchers etc.)

HOW IS THE DISEASE TRANSMITTED?

The disease is transmitted by inhalation of particles containing the virus (mainly respiratory secretions and contaminated poultry feces). Either by direct contact or by indirect contact through objects (litter, work outfits, shoes, food, empty bags, dust etc.) or equipment (production equipment, livestock premises) stained.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS?

In birds: very high mortality, severe respiratory disorders (cough, dyspnea, throwing, lacrimation), skin symptoms (edema, congestion and hemorrhage of ridges and barbels); (whitish diarrhea sometimes hemorrhagic), nervous symptoms (torticollis, motor incoordination, paralysis)

In humans: fever, sore throat, headache, fatigue, muscle and abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, pneumonia, eye infection etc.

WHAT ARE THE PREVENTION AND CONTROL MEASURES?

Use new alveoli; prohibit the reuse of cellulose alveoli;

Wash and disinfect plastic alveoli before each use;

Keep poultry away from wild bird use areas;

Exercise control of access of persons and equipment to chicken coops;

Ensure good control in the hygiene of the farm, chicken coops and equipment;

Avoid introducing birds of unknown health status into livestock farming;

Proper disposal of animal products and dead poultry;

Quarantine and strictly control the movement of poultry and any vehicle at risk;

Rigorous decontamination of premises, equipment and means of transport after each use;

Observance of a minimum of 21 days before! ' introduction of new poultry

Monitor Wild Birds Sites

Wearing personal protective equipment (gowns, boots, headdresses, masks and gloves) before donating poultry houses or handling birds

Install pediluves (this is a disinfectant solution or the boots are soaked before entering the chicken coop);

Hand wash with soap and water before and after contact with poultry;
